Paris Eats & Drinks

Travel Diary - Paris

Where to eat in Paris
I'm breaking down some of my favorite dining and wine spots in Paris from super affordable to down right fancy. Eat your heart out!

BREAKFAST

Au Petit Versailles du Marais

Cost - $

Breakfast in Paris is a no brainer. Look for croissants but not just any croissants. Au Petit Versailles du Marais has the absolute best ones. If you're feeling spontaneous order a a chocolate croissant (pain au chocolate). They are truly delightful. Soft and crisp at the same time with the perfect amount of butter and chocolate chips. Bon appétit!

BRUNCH & LUNCH

Angelina

Cost - $$

I discovered Angelina in 2008 when I studied abroad, went back again in 2015 on a trip with my husband, and recently again when we were there in May of 2019 because it's that good. Not only is the decor just darling, but the hot chocolate will change your life. It tastes like a melted chocolate bar and I'm here for it.

The first couple of times, I went to the location across from the Louvre and it definitely has the prettiest decor. I ordered their pre fixe brunch menu and it was way too much for one person, and quite pricey at 45 USD, but very pretty. This last time we visited, we went to the Musée de Luxembourg location. It's much smaller and more quaint. I really liked it. I got a ham, egg and cheese croissant with espresso and hot chocolate, of course! Ordering a la carte is much more affordable for the same experience.

There are several across the city so check Google to see which one is near you.

Brunch at Plaza Athénée

Cost - $$$

When we were in Paris in May, we went to a wedding brunch event at the courtyard in Plaza Athénée. All I can say is WOW. This is maybe the most beautiful hotel I've ever seen. The open air courtyard is surrounded by ivy covered Parisian buildings and it's just stunning. The food was great but this is really about the ambiance. It was very memorable.

Rue Cler

Cost - $$

We watch Rick Steves' Europe travel guides regularly on the weekends and in a Paris edition, he mentioned Rue Cler. We checked it out and it is quintessential Paris. There are tons of restaurants and markets on this charming street. We went to Léclair for brunch and it was packed. I would advise you go early as they do not take reservations and it is a very small restaurant. I had the Croque Madame and it was delicious.

Afterwards, stop by the Rue Cler Ladurée location for the best French macarons.

Royal Turenne

Cost - $$

We did a photography tour that ended in Le Marais right near Royal Turenne. When we walked past, it was almost full, which is a good sign that it's good! We got a table on the patio and ordered up. We opted for the American style breakfast since they had it. It came with bacon, eggs, sun-dried tomatoes, orange juice, espresso, and a croissant. I appreciated the croissant.

Ô Chateau

Cost - $$$
We had a lunch wine tasting at Ô Chateau and OH MY. This was one of our favorite experiences in Paris. We were guided to an underground cellar with charcuterie, bread, and cheeses for the wine tasting. Everything was topnotch. Every wine they served was French and the sommelier provided an education on the varietals and regions. We loved it so much we bought a few bottles to take home to the states!
Since we didn't have time to day trip to Loire Valley or Champagne, this was a great way to experience the best wine of France while not leaving Paris.

While we're on the topic of wine tastings, if you're feeling adventurous, I highly recommend a day trip to the Champagne region or Loire Valley. These full day trips are for the true wine lover!

DINNER

Au Sauvignon

Cost - $$

For some traditional French fare, head to Au Sauvignon. This tiny cafe boasts an excellent wine list and serves mostly bar snacks of various toppings on toasted bread. Established in the 1950s and resting on the corner of bustling Parisian streets, Au Sauvignon provided a relaxing evening on the patio with good food and great wine to watch the passersby.

Picnic at the Eiffel Tower

Cost - $
An excellent cost savings is to pack a bag and head to the Eiffel Tower for a sunset picnic. We stopped by a market on the way and got a baguette, cheese, salumi, and wine fo under 30 USD.
Another great option is to pop into Tour Eiffel for kabobs and fries. These kabobs were so cheap and SO good. I still crave them.

Les Ombres

Cost - $$$$

Les Ombres has one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower I have experienced. I felt like I could reach out and touch it!

They offer pre fixe or a la carte menus.

Make reservations for about an hour before sunset to give you time to settle in, then watch the sky turn cotton candy pink behind the Eiffel Tower as the sun sets. If you stay until 10pm, you can watch it sparkle from your cozy seat with champagne in hand. That is something to experience.

I could stay in Paris and eat and drink forever. With their charming patios and delicious croissants, why did I leave?

Don't forget to get the hot chocolate at Angelina. I'm serious!
